Historic Northumberland town with Hollywood fame makes solo travellers ‘must visit’ list

A very popular Northumberland town, known for attracting some very famous visitors over the year, from the Harry Potter cast to Vera icon Brenda Blethyn, has made the top 5 list for the best places for solo travellers to visit in the UK.

Statistics show that solo travel is more on trend than ever for 2025, with an estimated 24% of UK travellers planning to travel alone this year, as more people embracing the thrill of spontaneous getaways, with only 15% planning their trips more than six months ahead, and autumn and spring being the favourite seasons to hit the road.

With this in mind, the team at travel experts holidaycottages.co.uk have shared the most popular destinations in the UK and Ireland for a solo holiday based on internal booking data and Alnwick, one of the jewels in the Northumberland crown, has made the top 5, on a list topped by Lake District hotspot Keswick.

As well as having attention grabbing architecture, hidden gems like Barter Books and stunning views right on its door step, Alnwick has also been used countless times for blockbuster movies and hit TV shows. Harry Potter was famously filmed at Alnwick Castle, and has now inspired a new shop, while BAFTA winner Brenda and her Vera co-stars have been in and around the town to shoot the much loved ITV crime drama.

Other Hollywood films to be shot on location in Alnwick, which Holiday Cottages describe as ‘a wonderful base for solo travellers wanting to explore the North East of England and all of its beauty’ include the Downton Abbey movie, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Transformers: The Last Knight, making it a must visit place for anyone who arrives in the region.

Giving the town and the wider Northumberland area high praise as the 5th best place to check out on their list, Holiday Cottages said: “While the town itself boasts attractions like Alnwick Castle and the beautiful Alnwick Garden, the true gem is the nearby Northumberland Coast, offering miles of unspoiled beaches, scenic hiking trails, coastal views and incredible wildlife. Bamburgh Beach, with its dramatic views of Bamburgh Castle, is a perfect spot for quiet reflection, while the Farne Islands can be explored via boat trips, where solo travellers can spot puffins, seals, and other wildlife.”
