A pub which has been described as ‘landmark’ not just for Sunderland but for the wider North East has broken the shock news that it has permanently closed, with the announcement coming out of the blue and leaving its staff devastated.
Located just on the outskirts of Sunderland city centre in Millfield, the Mountain Daisy, while right in the middle of a built up residential area, stands out from all the properties that surround it, due to its stature and eye-catching exterior. It’s been part of the Wearside community for decades, as well as being a real champion for local music and just a few days ago, its Facebook page teased what was on the agenda for the coming weeks, making the news of its closure even more of a shock for its regular patrons.
Confirming that it would no longer be open for a business, as well as hinting it will never return as a pub, the Facebook post from management claimed they’d been informed last week that the building had been sold, with no further information given, as they continued: “I would like to thank everyone for their support and the staff for their efforts just as we were getting somewhere and turning the place round the rug was swept from under us but it was fun when in lasted!”
Highlighting just how much of a surprise the closure has been for staff as customers, the post ended: “This has come completely out of the blue and we are devastated to say the least, the time, effort and money put into the place since the reopening will never be able to get back. It will now be just another statistic.”
The statement on Mountain Daisy’s closure has been shared hundreds of times on Facebook, as well as it gathering plenty of comments, with locals both surprised and saddened by the outcome, including one who reacted: “This is so sad, it’s a beautiful building, it’s a Millfield landmark, the Daisy was the best pub by far, grew up in Cromwell street and the daisy is full of beautiful memories, from going to the Saturday night disco, to my 2 children having christening party in there, to my dad’s wake as the Daisy was his local.”
A number of customers have expressed hopes that a petition may be set up to try and secure its future as a boozer, as another upset regular responded: “So sorry to hear that, you have done so much to keep it running its a beautiful historical pub going back generations,so very sad” and a third posted: “Very sad news you have come on leaps and bounds with the Daisy since you took over, pity your plans were cut short”
