Holly Willoughby gives rare insight into parenting ‘struggle’ as she makes TV return

You Bet! is making a grand TV return, joining the ranks of Gladiators, Deal Or No Deal and Big Brother in the line-up of recently-revived shows. The iconic game show, which captivated audiences back in the 80s and 90s, is making a comeback with new hosts Holly Willoughby and Stephen Mulhern at the helm.

Holly, 43, shared her nostalgia for the show, saying: “I remember watching You Bet! as a kid, and I loved it,” she said. “For me, it felt like true Saturday night telly. I remember being glued to the TV while watching a digger pick up six delicate eggs in its giant jaws and placing them on egg cups, all in a minute. I remember looking at my dad who was equally as enthralled as I was.”

Stephen, 47, also expressed his enthusiasm, saying: “Every time I’ve been asked if there was a show that I could ever bring back, I’ve always said You Bet! So now is the chance for younger viewers who’ve never seen the show before to enjoy it and the older audience to reminisce and also see the show being brought up to date.”

Holly Willoughby left This Morning and her presenting partnership with Phillip Schofield last year, seamlessly transitioning into ITV’s new dynamic duo alongside her long-time friend Stephen. They’ve since been winning hearts with their gigs on Dancing On Ice and the exciting You Bet! “It’s lovely working with Stephen,” Holly said, reminiscing about their early days on Holly And Stephen’s Saturday Showdown back in 2004.

She added, “We started working together when I was in my twenties and have known each other for a very long time. There were lots of fun moments when filming this show together, we couldn’t help but play along and compete with each other.”

The thrills don’t just stay on screen, as Stephen shares that during one edge-of-your-seat challenge on the show, the hosts were holding onto each other. “They are really nail-biting and we were literally hanging onto each other,” he explained. “In one challenge, the challenger is attempting to scale the outside of a multi-storey car park to get to the top faster than a professional driver can drive up it. The climber slipped, the driver was almost hitting the posts, we could hardly watch. I’m so glad we had each other for support,” noting “Holly and I love working together.”

Holly is brimming with excitement about her new show, hoping it will become a family favourite just like it was for her. “They’ll be watching something they can really feel a part of and play along with at home,” she shared, reminiscing about the times she enjoyed the original show with her dad and hosts like Sir Bruce Forsyth.

But when it comes to competing, Holly admits she might not be the best under pressure, except when it involves her morning mum routine. “The moment I’m put under pressure it all goes out the window,” Holly confessed, adding that she could ace a challenge based on her daily dash to get Harry, 15, Belle, 13, and Chester, 10, who she shares with husband Dan Baldwin, ready for school.

“It’s quite a skill getting three kids dressed, ready, fed and out the door in the morning. So maybe that would be my skill, getting a household of kids to school on time!”

You Bet! promises to bring back some classic challenges and introduce new ones, with a fresh celebrity panel each episode betting on whether members of the public can pull off extraordinary feats. The audience’s top challenger wins £10,000, while the celeb who loses faces a hilarious forfeit.

Co-host Stephen hinted that viewers can look forward to a mix of nostalgic and novel tasks, including the iconic digger setting off fireworks and a couple identifying cacti in a rather unusual way.

He said: “There are all kinds of things going on!” Hinting at the nostalgia intermixed with fresh twists, he revealed, “There’s the return of the digger challenge, a real favourite from the original series, to quirkier challenges…like identifying a board game by hearing the contents being poured out into a box! We also have a new Quick Bets segment with fast-paced smaller challenges… like a woman folding five frying pans in half using her bare head in just 20 seconds and someone bench-pressing a washing machine while riding a unicycle.”

A star-studded line-up will appear on the celebrity panel including the hilarious Rob Beckett, the beloved Alison Hammond, pop star Olly Murs, and football ace Mary Earps – one of whom will bravely face the music if they end up on the losing end. “In each episode, the loser has to perform with the cast of a West End musical totally unrehearsed,” Stephen said.

The spectacle, as Holly Willoughby teased, ranges from excruciating to extraordinary: “The results are spectacular in all sorts of ways! It is not to be missed. It’s hilarious and sometimes hard to watch, but just brilliant.”

You Bet! begins next Saturday at 8.15pm on ITV1 and ITVX
