Hour by hour forecast for North East as Met Office warnings in place and region hit by heavy snow

Heavy snow is set to continue to fall across parts of the North East throughout today.

Met Office amber weather warnings, which warn of potential risk to life or significant travel disruption, remain in place in County Durham, where some areas will see the white stuff falling until tonight. Consett is set to be one of the worst hit areas. Heavy snow is forecast to fall over the town from 11am until 10pm tonight when it will change to sleet overnight before light snow returns at around 6am tomorrow, according to the Met Office. Temperatures will not rise above zero at all today. But forecasters say it will feel more live minus four degrees in the area.

The Met Office says snow is expected to lead to disruption throughout today and it is possible that some rural communities will be cut off and power cuts or problems with other services, such as mobile phone coverage, are possible.

Other parts of the North East have escaped the downfall of the white stuff, but are experiencing a very wet Sunday.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place in Newcastle. However, there is no snow forecast for the city and surrounding areas, which instead will be drenched by heavy rainfall throughout today and overnight. Temperatures are forecast to remain at around three degrees for almost 24 hours when they will drop slightly at around 10am tomorrow.

It’s a similar story across Northumberland, where there are no weather warnings in place. The county is also expected to experience heavy rain and temperatures of around three degrees for the next 24 hours, It is forecast to get colder at around midday tomorrow when the rain is expected to change to sleet.
