Newcastle United Wembley hero Dan Burn admitted he felt “numb” after writing his name into Geordie folkore with a power header at Wembley.
It was Burn’s goal that got the party started for Newcastle fans as they beat Premier League leaders Liverpool 2-1 to lift their first trophy in 70 years. However, Burn looked like a man who could not believe what was happening to him as he stood with a Carabao Cup winners medal around his neck and clutching the official man of the match award.
Burn told Chronicle Live: “I feel really strange – I feel numb. I don’t have any emotion. It is strange because I am wanting to feel something, it just won’t sink in. Hopefully, it will.
“I am just very, very proud to be from Newcastle and be part of this team. I have said it before it would have been a real shame not to have won something with this team. To do it we had to put on a perfect performance against Liverpool.”
Burn suggested that half-time came at a good time for Newcastle because the players were able to compose themselves after the euphoria of going 1-0 up. The Blyth lad added: “I think it did (half-time come at a good time) yeah. But the good thing was we had that experience of playing in these big games and being able to handle the pressure.
“I thought we saw the game out so well. It would not be a Newcastle performance without making it nervous. We had to do our bit there.
“But I thought even the lads that came on were brilliant. The amount of work the staff put in for our game plan, a lot of the time when we stick to the game we do well so a lot of credit goes to them especially the gaffer.”
For the Magpies it is hopefully the first of many trophies to come at St James’ Park and the wait for another cup won’t be spread across seven decades.
The Newcastle defender said: “I never ever wanted to say it but 70 years felt like a bit of a burden. That pressure on having to be that team to break that ceiling.
“We know that we can do it. Hopefully, that is the first of many.
“Since the owners have come in and the manager came in we have made a big thing about winning trophies. And I think that gives us confidence now to want to do more.”
