I heard X-rated Newcastle United trophy sneer but Manchester United should be worried

The freedom of the city awaits Eddie Howe after ending Newcastle United’s long wait for silverware. However, when Paul Scholes was asked whether the Magpies boss deserved a statue, the Manchester United legend laughed.

He’s won the League Cup,” Scholes scoffed. “F—— hell! Everyone tries to get knocked out of that all year.”

Really? Manchester City have won the trophy six times in the last decade or so. Liverpool triumphed in 2024 and 2022. Scholes’ beloved Manchester United even lifted the cup in 2023 and 2017.

It is not exactly an easy competition to win, is it? In fact, Swansea City were the last outsider to do so way back in 2013 and Newcastle had to defeat the Premier League’s current top four – Liverpool, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Chelsea – to end the drought once and for all. Nottingham Forest and Chelsea may have made changes in the earlier rounds, but Newcastle beat Arsenal’s strongest available side in each leg of the semi-final before going on to defeat Liverpool, the league leaders and holders, who only made two changes – one enforced – from the XI who faced PSG in the Champions League a few nights previously.

In truth, it is hard to imagine Howe even taking notice of Scholes’ comments. Rather than indulging in talk of statues or his side becoming immortals at Wembley, the Newcastle boss sounded like a man who was just getting started after 70 years of hurt.

“Our job is to give our best every day and that will never change,” he said. “That won’t change now in this moment and we have to represent the club in the right way, which I think these players have done very well….I do think we have some iconic players who will go down as legends of the football club in the future, but they have still got to cement that legacy.”

Those words sound ominous for Newcastle’s rivals. The Magpies won’t want to stop at winning the Carabao Cup. They will have their sights set on even bigger prizes in the years to come.
