Alexander Isak said it, himself, just last week.
“Sometimes you see things that make you laugh,” the Newcastle United striker admitted after being asked about the constant speculation surrounding his future.
Paul Merson’s latest comments certainly fit that description. Barely 12 hours after seeing Isak terrorise William Saliba and Gabriel, the former Arsenal midfielder once again talked up the prospect of this ‘special player’ joining the Gunners.
“On the way in, I was thinking, ‘Where’s he going to go? Where can he go?'” Merson told Sky Sports. “He’s not going to Man City. He’s not going to Man United. I don’t know if Man United have got any money to buy anyone anyway. He’s not going to Tottenham. I don’t think he will go to [Aston] Villa.
“I think he can only go to Arsenal in the whole world, really, unless it’s Real Madrid but they have got [Kylian] Mbappe anyway. So, for me, it’s only Arsenal where he can go and then it will be up to him.”
Before you even get into the eye-watering financials, and the fact Isak still has three-and-a-half years left on his contract, why does the Sweden star even need to go as Merson implies?
This is not the Newcastle of old who willingly cash in on their prized assets; the Magpies want to satisfy Isak’s ambitions by winning the Carabao Cup and by returning to the Champions League. When Alan Shearer floated the prospect of Isak signing a new long-term deal, the striker even teased: “We’ll see.” And why not?
Isak has repeatedly said he is ‘really happy’ at Newcastle. The 25-year-old has described playing for the black-and-whites as a ‘dream’, which has been made ‘extra special’ by the club’s fan base. The striker has even called St James’ Park ‘home’.
Merson may continue to speculate about Isak’s next move, but Newcastle’s record signing does not sound like someone thinking about that. Quite the opposite, in fact.
