Newcastle United have two of the Premier League’s most dangerous forwards in their side as they look to keep their season alive on three fronts. Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon have again been electric for Eddie Howe this term, with the Magpies competing for glory in the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Swedish striker Isak has smashed 19 goals in just 28 appearances for United this season, and has earned comparisons with Premier League great Thierry Henry. The Frenchman starred for Arsenal for eight season, hitting 226 goals for the Gunners before leaving for Barcelona in 2007.
Isak again tormented Arsenal in last week’s Carabao Cup semi-final win at St James’ Park, with the usually solid Gunners defence struggling to contain United’s star man. It was another performance than impressed pundit Jamie O’Hara, who highlighted the Henry similarities Newcastle fans will love.
“Gabriel and William Saliba could not deal with Alexander Isak at all on Wednesday – he had them rattled,” told Grosvenor Sport. “Arsenal were all over the place. That is the first time I’ve ever seen them like that and they’re probably the best defensive partnership in the world now, which just shows how good Isak is.
“There are shades of Thierry Henry about him – he’s so sharp playing of the shoulder of the centre back and he’s so deadly in front of goal. He’s exactly the type of player that Arsenal were missing and he’s undoubtedly one of the best strikers in the world.
“Anthony Gordon’s energy and work rate is unbelievable, he keeps going and going,” he said. “Defensively, he’s brilliant and he must be a dream for Eddie Howe – he always tucks in and helps the left back. When the ball goes up, he’s sprinting after it, he covers some ground and it’s so hard to handle.
“I still think there’s more from him, I was watching last night thinking he has more to give despite how well he played. He’s a top footballer and he has been brilliant this season. He should be starting for England on the left side in my mind.”
