Inquest opens into death of much-loved Durham man who died in HGV crash

An inquest has been opened into the death of a driver who died after a collision with an HGV.

Stephen Taylor, 38, a shop worker who lived in Meadowfield, near Durham, was fatally injured in a Vauxhall Corsa on the A167 near the Honest Lawyer pub at Croxdale.

The crash happened on the morning of November 15 and Durham Constabulary is investigating the circumstances. Inquest proceedings have been opened by County Durham’s Senior Coroner Jeremy Chipperfield.

In a statement submitted to the court, Coroner’s Officer Emily Bourne said: “I understand the circumstances to be that Mr Stephen Ian Taylor was travelling along the A167 Northbound when for unknown reasons his vehicle veered into the opposing lane.

“The deceased’s vehicle collided with a barrier on its offside and as it did so a HGV hit the vehicle head on.”

Home Office pathologist Dr Nigel Cooper conducted a post-mortem examination at Newcastle Freeman Mortuary on November 21. He concluded the provisional cause of death was a blunt head injury.

Following his death Mr Taylor’s paid tribute and said he was ‘loved by all’. They said: “He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbours.”

A police investigation remains ongoing with officers keen to speak to anyone with dashcam footage. To help call the serious collision investigation unit on 01325-742-745 quoting incident number 122 of November 15.
