Inside Newcastle’s massive fan zone ahead of hectic Paddy Fest and cup final weekend

It is about to welcomes tens of thousands of people across the weekend and the doors have now opened on one of the biggest fan zones in Newcastle, as it also becomes the centre of the city’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations.

In what looks set to be a bust few days for the city, Paddy Fest and the Carabao Cup final at the same time, meaning that the huge marquee in Times Square is bound to be packed to the rafters from now until Monday, as crowds of people flock to enjoy live music, drink lots of Guinness and, of course, cheer on Newcastle United as they take on Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday.

After revealing that plans were in the pipeline for a fan zone should NUFC make it to the final, tickets for the Times Square event went on sale just minutes after the final whistle blew on a 2-0 second leg victory over Arsenal at St James’ Park on February 5 and, by the following lunchtime, all of them had been snapped up. That means there an estimated crowd of 3,000 people will be in the Paddy Fest marquee, adorned with orange, white and green banners,. to hopefully see the Magpies end their 70 year wait for a major trophy.

But there is plenty on before a ball has been kicked at Wembley as, after a student darts event on Thursday, more darts players and fans were set to descend on TImes Square on Friday night for Flight Night, which had been described as ‘Ally Pally meets Bongo’s Bingo.’ And then on Saturday, as well showing live coverage of the Six Nations rugby on its big screens, Paddy Fest will get going properly with live entertainment throughout the day.

Irish band and dancers are lined up to take the stage, with games and giveaways promised, DJs on the decks into the night, as well as steins of beer and of course Guinness. Tickets to go on Saturday as still available from the Paddy Fest website, priced from £12. And then if, Newcastle win or lose on Sunday and you’re determined to keep the St Patrick’s festivities going, there will be a Tropiloco Padddy’s Day itself to round off the weekend in style on Monday.
