Newcastle United or Arsenal will end tonight as Wembley finalists after their Carabao Cup semi-final concludes at St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe’s side find themselves firmly in the driving seat having performed exceptionally last month in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium. Goals either side of half time from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon gave the Magpies a two-goal advantage heading into tonight’s reverse leg.
Both clubs’ seasons potentially hinge on the result tonight, with Arsenal still underdogs for the Premier League title and out of the FA Cup. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s wait for a major trophy stretches back to 1955 and silverware remains their No.1 objective this season.
From United’s perspective, there is a desire for the game not to reach extra time or penalties considering their current advantage in the tie. However, should things go wrong for them tonight, ChronicleLive has taken a closer look at what the rules are surrounding the semi-final.
Is there extra time in the Carabao Cup semi-finals?
This season, the EFL decided to scrap extra time from the first round onwards as they aimed to end fatigue which has plagued clubs in their system. However, extra time is still in operation for the semi-finals and final, should Newcastle reach that showpiece next month.
Away goals are not used in the Carabao Cup these days so there is no advantage for Arsenal should they win 3-1 at St James’ Park in 90 minutes. In this scenario, the game would finish level and go straight to extra time.
If the match is still level at extra time, a penalty shootout will be played to decide the winner.
