Ex-Made in Chelsea star Jamie Laing has bravely spoken out about his daily struggle with “debilitating” tinnitus and the journey to his diagnosis. Gracing the This Morning sofa on Thursday, Jamie shared his personal battle with viewers, explaining it was a decade ago when he first noticed symptoms.
Tinnitus sufferers experience a persistent ringing or buzzing in their ears that doesn’t come from an outside source, with Jamie revealing that his condition is permanent. He recounted the initial confusion of hearing a buzzing sound and searching his house for its origin, only to realize the noise was emanating from within.
“My story is that nine years ago, I woke up one morning and I could hear this ringing. I searched the whole house to find this noise and then realised that it was in my head,” he said. “I’m a big advocate for talking about it. The hard thing about it is that no one can see it or feel it.”
“It’s really upsetting,” he confided. “This is for life and you think, ‘How am I going to get through this?’ But your brain can do amazing things where you realise how to work around it.”
When delving into what caused his tinnitus, Jamie didn’t hesitate: “Loud music. I never protected my ears – you can listen to music so loud, I went to a lot of nightclubs when I was younger, London can be quite loud,” reports the Mirror.
Jamie concluded with a heartfelt plea to viewers, encouraging them to look after their hearing health. “Somehow protect your ears in certain ways. Protect yourself from having tinnitus,” he urged, hoping others will take pre-emptive steps to safeguard themselves against this lifelong ailment.
The former Made in Chelsea star Jamie Laing is happily married to his co-star Sophie Habboo, and they’ve opened up about their desire to have children in the future. Jamie confessed on his podcast Great Company earlier this month that while he’s keen on having kids, the idea of such a permanent commitment still unnerves him.
“I would really like to have one, but it has been a real long road because I was really scared of babies and I was really scared of commitment,” Jamie revealed. He added, “The idea of not being able to escape something, with work or even divorce, there’s always a way out. But with a baby there’s no way out. There is no way out because you are committed to that little human forever and that for me is really quite scary. Still really scary, it is a real fear..”
Sharing a personal moment, Jamie confided: “To the point where at the start of last year, Sophie thought she was pregnant and I had to leave the restaurant because I was so stressed.”
He acknowledged, “Firstly that is not a good partner. It made me really nervous, but also made Sophie really scared because as a partner you want someone secure and relaxed, and it made her feel uneasy.”
