Jermaine Dupri doesn’t believe that Former En Vogue singer Dawn Robinson is living in her car because of her financial situation.
“It’s her choice to be in the car,” Dupri said during a recent Instagram Live session. “From my understanding, for her to speak on it the way she spoke on it, she was basically saying that she saw other people living in their vans, living in RVs, and she welcomed the idea of doing this.”
His reasoning for believing that she chose to live a nomad lifestyle from her car, he suggested, was that she mentioned that she has an assistant. “Having an assistant isn’t something that you should even think about if you don’t have no money,” he continued. “It changed my whole vibe of what I was watching, because ain’t no goddamn way she got an assistant. … When you ain’t got no money and you out here just doing what you got to do, you doing shit by yourself. You moving around by yourself!”
He said that it “don’t make sense” that she doesn’t have the money to live elsewhere if she’s had an assistant for three years. “She’s definitely not broke saying she’s got an assistant, that’s all I’m saying,” he said.
In a recent YouTube vlog, Dawn Robinson revealed that she’s been living in her car for the last three years. “You guys, for the past three—almost three years—I have been living in my car,” Robinson said, adding that she was living with her parents in Las Vegas for a few years before she ran into issues with her mother. She said that a co-manager helped her look for an apartment in Los Angeles, but those plans fell through. She accused the co-manager of attempting to “trap her” to keep her “in a vulnerable situation.”
At that point, she said she told her assistant that she was interested in living in her car. She drove to Malibu, and suggested that it felt like she was “on a camping trip.” Robinson said that she doesn’t regret the decision and that she’s not living in her car for publicity reasons. In fact, she noted that she hopes to make a documentary about living off the grid in the future.
After she shared the vlog, her ex-husband Andre Allen offered her a hospitality job with Hilton Brands.
