Joelinton comeback in sight as Newcastle United want Brazil star to play part in run-in

Joelinton could be back in action in a Newcastle United shirt in time for the trip to Burnley at the start of next month.

Having signed a new Toon contract last week, the midfield enforcer is closing in on a return after a thigh operation. But he is eager to make up for lost time and could figure in up to four matches in the Premier League run-in.

Eddie Howe and the backroom team are pleased with the Brazil international’s progress but are trying not to put undue pressure on the £40million man. Howe said: “We have missed him and he’s got that presence. He is a big guy in personality and stature.

“I think we’ve missed his duel-winning ability, his coverage in midfield and his versatility which can’t be underestimated. We need him back as quickly as possible.”

Joelinton has not been seen in action since the 3-0 win over Sunderland in the FA Cup third round at the Stadium of Light. Before that he had started 14 Premier League games featuring mainly in midfield.

The South American star has not had a clear run in the team this season after suffering hamstring issues in the early part. Howe is eager to see him back to what he does best, breaking up opposition plays and provided a layer of cover for his left-back.

He said: “His defensive qualities have been as good as his attacking qualities. That’s why he is the all round midfielder that he is now.”
