Kieran Trippier feels that Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup final preparations can help the club make history at Wembley on Sunday.
The Magpies have opted against taking the Hilton at Wembley in favour of a more secluded set-up on the outskirts of the capital and will take the bus in on cup final day. Last time around, United turned up last year and Newcastle staff were shocked as they were whisked through a rowdy bar area and up to he higher levels of the complex.
And while the Wembley Hilton had everything Howe’s team needed it was difficult for players and staff to build-up to the cup final, which also had a teatime kick off, with fans gathered outside the hotel. Trippier told Chronicle Live: “It is what it is. It’s about learning. I think the club learned a lot from the first time around. I think a lot more things are well organised this time.
“I’m not saying it was bad last time, but I think we’re more prepared, like I said before because we’ve been in this position now. We played Man United in the last cup final and now we’re more prepared because of it, we’re more relaxed. Now we’ve just got to review this game at West Ham and look forward to another special occasion at the weekend against Liverpool.
“There was a lot of noise the first time it was in the final, but now the lads have experienced it, we know how to handle it. It’ll be a different feel for everyone this time. The most important thing is to stay calm, stay relaxed, and like I said, we’ve been in this position before.”
The Magpies have tried to make the fixture on Sunday against the Reds more like a routine encounter. Trippier said: “Again, it’s about being calm.
“It’s about not overthinking anything. Look at it as another game. I know it might be hard to believe, but I just look at it as another game, another good opportunity, shall I say.
“So what we can do is just prepare well, train well like we did this week, building up to it. Like I said, everyone’s calm, everyone’s relaxed, and all we can do is give our all. Whatever the outcome is, that’s the outcome.”
Trippier was one of the star performers at West Ham and offered the team plenty of leadership on a tough night at the London Stadium. He added: “Of course, you want to win any game before a cup final, you don’t want to be going into the cup final on the back of a defeat, but we know we can improve individually and as a group, and we’ve got to show that same character on the weekend.
