Kieran Trippier reveals pay cut truth after Simon Jordan’s jibe at Newcastle United star

Kieran Trippier has reiterated that he took ‘less money’ to join Newcastle United after the defender helped end the Magpies’ long wait for silverware.

Trippier put in an impressive performance in Newcastle’s 2-1 win against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday as the black-and-whites won a major domestic trophy for the first time in seven decades. Trippier defended superbly throughout and also set up Dan Burn’s opener with a trademark set-piece delivery in the first half on an emotional night for the 34-year-old.

Trippier, after all, was the first signing of the new era, the England international willing to swap life in the Champions League with Atletico Madrid for an immediate relegation battle. Although Newcastle had huge long-term ambitions, the Magpies’ dire situation in the table at the time led to accusations from outsiders, like Simon Jordan, that Trippier only moved to St James’ Park for ‘one reason and one reason only’ – the ‘economic package’.

However, Jordan ‘took back’ what he said a few months later following Trippier’s committed performances for the club and the veteran has proved one or two people wrong.

“People questioned why Newcastle and why I left Atletico Madrid, but I have no regrets in my career….when I signed for Newcastle, they were 19th,” he told CBS Sports. “People thought it was about money, etc. I took less money to come here, but that’s what people don’t realise. It’s not all about money in football. I wanted to come back to the north for my family.”

Trippier had previously tasted painful defeats in finals for Newcastle, England and Spurs, which made the win all the more sweeter for the right-back, who lifted the cup alongside captain Bruno Guimaraes at full-time. These were nights the pair dreamed of when they joined the club in 2022.

“When I first arrived at the club, there were questions, but I worked with the manager before,” Trippier added. “I know what he expects and demands, and I said I wanted to help the club build and build. Not just for myself personally. Finally, we have got a winners’ medal.”
