Legendary Northumberland inn that’s ‘one of a kind’ snapped up by famous pub chain

A legendary pub in Northumberland, with its own stunning hotel rooms now has new owners, after being snapped up by well known chain Greene King.

Thought to have been built in the 1600s, The Dirty Bottles in Alnwick has been serving customers for two centuries now, making it one of the much visited town’s most famous boozers as well as earning plenty of feedback for its plush rooms above the bar.

Steeped in history, the story goes that two centuries ago, the innkeeper mysteriously dropped dead while interfering with the bottles in the window. His widow declared that anyone who did the same would suffer the same fate. As a result, the Dirty Bottles were sealed between two windows and have stood there ever since — that’s when the pub, as we know it today, was born.

And, while its back story and exterior are rooted in the past, don’t expect an archaic experience if you decide to stay the night, as all of the hotel rooms offer Wi-Fi and smart TVs, with the added bonus of luxury toiletries on the house.

Known for being independently run, The Dirty Bottles was bought by Greene King, known for having plenty of venues across the North East and wider UK, with it re-opening its doors under new ownership at the weekend. Delighted to have it on their roster, Greene King took to Facebook to write: “We’re excited to announce that The Dirty Bottles. is joining the Greene King Inns family, re-opening today.

“Full of character just like its surroundings, this iconic and historic venue has been a favourite for centuries, and our team can’t wait to welcome you back. We’re only a stone’s throw away from the famous film set and local attraction, Alnwick Castle.”

Speaking of the castle, on Monday it made a list of the ‘most iconic’ filming locations to visit by train, having been used in two Harry Potter films, a Transformers movie and two series of Downton Abbey.
