Lil Yachty called out the Black Lives Matter organization for being a “scam” during his appearance on Quenlin Blackwell’s YouTube channel.
After being pressed about the amount of money he has given to charitable causes, Yachty was asked at the 31:51 mark if he has ever donated to the Black Lives Matter organization. “BLM? Since you want to be so Black power,” Blackwell suggested, to which he responded, “BLM is a scam.”
“Clip that! Send it to the fucking news,” Blackwell jokingly fired back.
“BLM was a—it was literally a scam,” Yachty explained. “They had bought mansions.”
Lil Boat appeared to be referencing accusations against the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation for misusing donations after it was revealed that the foundation paid $6 million for compound in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Studio City.
Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors told The Associated Press in 2022 that the intent behind purchasing the property, which includes six bedrooms and bathrooms, a swimming pool, soundstage and office space, was to provide Black artists with a campus and meeting venue.
“We really wanted to make sure that the global network foundation had an asset that wasn’t just financial resources,” Cullors said. “And we understood that not many Black-led organizations have property. They don’t own their property.”
BLM supporters argued that buying the property could create distrust among donors who are weary about how their contributions are being used.
While Cullors attempted to ease concerns by addressing the property situation, she admitted that compound was used twice for personal reasons.
Cullors has also vehemently denied accusations of buying homes for herself and family members with contributions for the foundation.
“The idea that (the foundation) received millions of dollars and then I hid those dollars in my bank account is absolutely false,” she said. “That’s a false narrative. It’s impacted me personally and professionally, that people would accuse me of stealing from Black people.”
Cullors stepped down as the foundation’s executive director in 2021.
