Fans of Married At First Sight Australia were left gobsmacked as Jake Luik made his dramatic exit from the show following the first commitment ceremony, leaving his new bride Ashleigh Ackerman in the dust during Tuesday night’s gripping episode. The 30 year old caused quite the stir during Confessions Week with his polarising photo ranking antics. Not stopping at placing his wife below other brides in terms of attraction, he also sparked controversy with his brash critiques of the female participants.
Among his contentious comments, he remarked one bride had “crazy eyes,” while another was likened to a horror movie character who you might find ominously standing at the end of your bed with a knife. But perhaps his most shocking assertion was when he stated: “I’m not racist or nothing but I do like Caucasian people mainly, mostly.”

Ashleigh confided these sentiments to another bride and laid it all on the table during Monday’s intense commitment ceremony. Feeling betrayed over his wife’s disclosures to others, Jake voiced to relationship experts John Aiken, Mel Schilling, and Alessandra Rampolla that his trust in Ashleigh was shaken.
The pair attempted to hash things out back at their apartment, where Ashleigh sought to clarify her position and expressed her hurt over Jake’s lack of trust, reports the Mirror.
However, no resolution came of it as Jake grabbed his suitcase and made for the door. Shrouded in disappointment, Jake vented, “I’m disappointed that she didn’t try to make it a pleasant experience,” before making his swift departure from the experiment. Ashleigh didn’t mince her words after her husband made his departure: “I think Jake is a 30 year old man with the maturity of a teenager,” she remarked.
Viewers were equally dismayed by his actions. A disappointed fan declared on X: “I hope Ashleigh finds her person and I hope Jake grows the hell up,” echoing the sentiments of many. “Very childish, he said it on tv either way it would have been seen and talked about. Jake could have stayed and redeemed himself, instead he ran away,” lamented another, frustrated by his missed chance at redemption. A third chimed in with a more supportive take for Ashleigh: “Tbh Jake is doing Ash a favour by leaving, he’s too immature and childish for a relationship, Ash deserved an actual man.”

Jake and Ashleigh’s split isn’t the first shake-up this series even though things are just heating up. The persnickety Eliot bailed out mere hours into his honeymoon when his bride Lauren failed to tick all the boxes on his comprehensive ‘non-negotiables’ list.
Elsewhere, Katie and Tim unanimously chose to exit at their first commitment ceremony, after Tim rebuffed his bride. His reaction to meeting Katie at the altar was telling: “What the f***? ,” he told producers, blindsided. “Totally not what I wanted. It’s not good. I normally go just short, blonde, petite. Katie is like nothing that I would normally go for.”
The writing was already on the wall when Tim confessed to Katie that he felt “no spark” before they’d even jetted off on their honeymoon. His subsequent no-show at their shared apartment, despite making an appearance at the initial group dinner, only served to drive the point home.
It was a bombshell moment when Tim suddenly materialised at the commitment ceremony, only to be called out by John Aiken for attempting to shift the blame for their relationship woes onto Katie – a classic case of gaslighting. Given the tumultuous state of their union, it was hardly a shock when both Tim and Katie opted to write ‘leave’ and bid farewell to MAFS for good.
