Martin Compston teases Line of Duty’s future as he calls for EastEnders star to join cast

Line of Duty star Martin Compston has expressed his desire for fellow actor Danny Dyer to join the show. In a candid chat with the Mirror, the Steve Arnott portrayer disclosed that while there are currently no definite plans to revive their beloved characters, if the popular BBC series were to swing back into action, he thinks 46 year old Danny would be a fabulous choice.

Ahead of facing off against the former EastEnder in Soccer Aid, Martin gushed about Danny, he said: “[Danny] would be a great shout [as a ‘bent copper’ on the show]. Danny is something else, honestly, he is one of our treasures. He is a wonderful actor – it would be good to see [him] in there.”

The Scotsman has been on Soccer Aid’s roster since 2014, teaming up with a host of household names on the pitch each year to raise funds for UNICEF UK.

Regarding his involvement in the star-studded event and the impact it’s had on him, Martin revealed: “I do love it, when I started, for me it was about being able to play in these incredible stadiums and meet the icons of the game. It has changed for me over the years, I have been lucky enough to work with UNICEF and go out to see the incredible work that they do first-hand.”

Sharing his thoughts on the importance of the upcoming charity football match in June, actor Martin continued to praise the game and that it makes a huge difference for those who need help from the charity.

The star previously trained with Aberdeen F.C.’s youth team and Greenock Morton F.C., indicating that his past experience might give him a leg-up at the event.

Martin first joined the Soccer Aid squad in 2014, at that time the captain was Michael Sheen, and they played with the likes of James McAvoy, Gordon Ramsay and Sam Worthington.

This year’s Soccer Aid celebs include Bobby Brazier, Sam Thompson, Paddy McGuinness, Mo Farah and Sam Quek.

Looking forward to the upcoming game, Martin compared the warm-up sessions to a simple kickabout with friends.

He shared: “You always get a bit nervous, you get scared as you know these places are sought after – everyone is desperate to play. Once it has been announced, we all get a bit giddy. It is like being school kids again, I have made some great friendships over the years. It is like going for a kickabout with your friends.”
