McDonald’s to introduce American menu favourite to UK branches for the first time

A McDonald’s milkshake which is popular in the US is to go on sale at its UK restaurants in March but for a limited time only.

A Shamrock Shake has been a regular on the menu of branches in America where it first went on sale in 1970 to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, which gives a hint as to its colour. The shake, which takes its name from the clover that is the symbol of Ireland, is green – the colour always associated with celebrations of the country’s patron saint – and is a blend of peppermint-flavour syrup with a vanilla milkshake base.

The drink, which even had a mascot in the US called Uncle O’Grimacey, has been sold since in Ireland as well as Canada but this will be the first time it has launched in the UK, reports The Mirror. It will go on sale in McDonald’s stores here on Wednesday, March 12 but the downside is that it will be available for only a limited time.

The fast food chain has yet to reveal the precise time span or its cost but during the time the shake is on the menu it will be donating 20p from each sale to the Ronald McDonald House Charity which provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation to families with children in hospital.

Rumours that the Shamrock Shake could be coming to the UK had been circulating ahead of the news, with a Newfoodsuk Facebook page recently sharing word of the “super minty” drink. Responses included “I’m feeling this” and “I had it when I went to New York. It’s really nice.”

McDonald’s recently re-launched another popular milkshake in its restaurants, a blueberry-flavour Grimace Shake inspired by its Grimace mascot, which was on sale for just two weeks.
