Miles Lewis-Skelly is one hell of a player. The Arsenal youngster has enjoyed a meteoric rise this season and, aged just 18, has the footballing world at his feet. It’s no wonder that there is already talk of new England boss Thomas Tuchel calling him into his first squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers.
The Three Lions head coach would have been watching last night as Arsenal took on Newcastle United in an incredible Carabao Cup semi-final in front of a defeaning St James’ Park crowd – but the left-back who stood out was not wearing red.
Lewis Hall’s form this season has been just as impressive at Lewis-Skelly’s. He’s already won his first England caps in November under interim boss Lee Carsley, and now faces the challenge of persuading Tuchel that’s he good enough to fill the problem position. But in the white-hot atmosphere and under the glare of the watching world, he once again passed the test with flying colours.
For me, Hall was one of the stand-out players of the 2-0 win at the Emirates which set United up perfectly for the second leg. His reading of the game is unbelievable for someone of his tender years – he’s still only 20 – while he has added a defensive nous to his game that was perhaps missing in his first season on Tyneside.
Much has quite rightly been made of Kieran Trippier’s contribution last night, but Hall was equally dominant on the left-hand side, and his partnership with Anthony Gordon is blossoming into one of the most exciting combinations in the Premier League. It’s a link-up that should also bloom in the white of England.
He stood up to the best Arsenal had to offer in both legs, and the fact Mikel Arteta had to rotate his wingers was a sign of how little success they were having. Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Ethan Nwaneri and Raheem Sterling all came and went without creating a great deal.
Tuchel knows all about Hall from his early days at Chelsea, and should have no hesitation in selecting him in his first England squad next month when they host Albania and then Latvia at Wembley – just a few days after Newcastle’s Carabao Cup final appearance. Miles-Skelly has also earned his place in the squad but, for all the hype around the young Gunner, United’s No 20 has the clear edge when it comes to first-team selection.
