Myles Lewis-Skelly will now be available for Arsenal’s impending trip to Newcastle United for their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg showdown on Wednesday, February 6.
The 18-year-old was shown a controversial red card during the Gunners’ 1-0 victory over Wolves, at Molineux, on Saturday. On-field referee Michael Oliver gave Lewis-Skelly his marching orders in the 43rd minute after stopping Matt Doherty from starting a counter-attack on his edge of his own penalty area.
Video assistant referee Darren England, aided by Adrian Holmes, the assistant VAR, checked and confirmed the decision, deeming the challenge as serious foul play. Replays suggested that, as well as preventing Wolves from breaking clear, Lewis-Skelly caught his opponent on the top of the Achilles.
Despite this, Mikel Arteta was left furious with Lewis Skelly’s dismissal, while Oliver’s decision has since received a huge amount of backlash from the wider footballing community. Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards labelled it as the “worst decision in Premier League history”.
But now, the Football Association have confirmed that the red card handed to Lewis-Skelly has been overturned, meaning that he will be available for the club’s next three domestic fixtures.
A statement from the FA read: “An independent regulatory commission has upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal in relation to Myles Lewis-Skelly and removed his three-match suspension. The Arsenal player was sent off for serious foul play during their Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, January 25, 2025.”
Lewis-Skelly was due to be banned for Premier League games against Manchester City and Leicester City, as well as the Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg at St James’ Park. He is now expected to feature against Newcastle, providing the Gunners with a major boost as they bid to overturned their two-goal deficit and progress through to the Wembley showpiece.
