Netflix Missing You viewers point out one major problem with Harlan Coben series

Harlan Coben’s eagerly awaited new thriller Missing You has finally hit Netflix, but it seems not everyone is thrilled with the series. The latest offering – arriving hot on the heels of the smash-hit Fool Me Once starring Michelle Keegan – made its debut on New Year’s Day. It centres around Katy Donovan who stumbles upon her long-lost partner on a dating app, despite not having seen him for a decade.

With the pressure on to match the success of its predecessor, Missing You boasts a glittering ensemble including Top Boy’s Ashley Walters, EastEnders‘ Jessica Plummer, Rosalind Eleazar, Richard Armitage, and Lisa Faulkner. Viewers love the stellar cast, yet opinions are divided over the lead actors’ on-screen chemistry.

Critics aren’t sure about the chemistry between the leads

Nick Hilton from The Independent wasn’t entirely impressed, awarding the show a mere two stars. He commented: “Of course, nobody, at this point, watches a Harlan Coben adaptation for the gripping interpersonal chemistry. This is television for the shattered attention span. Every few minutes there’s a new twist to trigger the dopamine receptors in your brain and try to keep you from doom scrolling on Instagram for another few minutes, until the next twist,” reports the Mirror.

He continued: “There’s a sort of intellectual dishonesty to basing so much of your narrative on faulty information, but viewers won’t care so long as the cliffhangers and gasp-inducing revelations keep coming. It’s not subtle, but it is effective.”

The Standard’s Hayley Spencer weighed in on the show, pinpointing it as an ideal post-New Year indulgence. “So as long as you’re not expecting small screen mastery, or indeed the performance of year (it is the first of January after all) then do go forth and gobble up this latest Coben drama,” she recommended.

Richard Armitage is back for another Harlan Coben show

“It will fill the void on this final languid sofa day of the festive season. And give you plenty of opportunities for some second screen-time alongside watching – this is not drama that needs your undivided attention.”

Just hours into 2025, viewers are already hooked on the series, taking to social media to express their pleasure. One viewer took to Twitter, saying: “New Year, same me. Starting the day with a Netflix binge I think. See what #MissingYou has to offer.”

Echoing the positive sentiments, another posted: “Currently watching @HarlanCoben #MissingYou on Netflix … so far so good :D.”

Meanwhile, a third chimed in: “Started this 2025 series and it is looking good already #Netflix #Missingyou.”
