Newcastle bar ‘cancels’ Sunday dinners for final as whole city hopes for cup win

It’s a place that has people flocking every weekend for its roasts but, as people look set to pack out a bar in Newcastle with a serious appetite for cup glory, it announced that it was ‘cancelling’ its Sunday dinners as all of Tyneside hoped for a United win at Wembley.

Voted the best bar in Newcastle city centre by ChronicleLive readers and one of the first places in town to make bottomless brunch a thing back in 2016, No.28 has become known for serving up amazing and very budget friendly roasts every Sunday, with people booking up in big numbers to see what all the fuss is about.

However, there was bad news for anyone hoping to escape the football or have a Sunday dinner before kick off between Newcastle v Liverpool as, with the Carabao Cup final being ‘the only show in town’ a post appeared on the No.28 Facebook page to announce that there would be no roasts on the go this weekend.

A photo from inside the Nelson Street bar, right next to the Grainger Market, showed a big projector screen up on one of its walls, as those still hoping for some pre-match food were assured that there were beer and burger deals running from 12 noon until 6pm.

News of No.28 shelving its highly rated Sunday dinners for a week came after a huge queue lined up outside St James’ STACK just up the road. Doors to the fan park opened at 10am, but by 8 there was already a queue of people round the block, as supporters waited to secure a prime position for the final.

And then, just a stone’s throw away from STACK and right in the shadow of St James’ Park, much loved match day pub The Strawberry opened earlier than usual at 9am, ready to welcome fans.
