Newcastle handed clear transfer message after injury nightmare strikes
Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson is reported to be out for two months after suffering a hamstring injury, adding to his woes – and Chronicle Live readers in our comments section are desperate for a resolution to support Alexander Isak as he faces his own transfer saga.
The 32 year-old Wilson has made four appearances this season after recovering from back and hamstring complaints in the summer, with manager Eddie Howe having been eager not to add to his injuries list. However, the Daily Mail has reported that a further hamstring injury will keep him out for the next two months – and Wilson has said that he is more “upset and frustrated” than anyone else.
Wilson’s contract expires in 2025, so that puts an end to any planned sale of the English forward in January. He has scored 48 goals in 112 appearances for the club, but now his time in Newcastle is likely to end quietly.
This means that all hopes rest on Alexander Isak, who has already suffered a toe injury this season. Isak, who finished third in the Premier League goals table last season, is subject to transfer interest from Arsenal.
This has left readers worrying for the future of their club’s forward line. Commenter Pedster writes: “You have been a great servant, we appreciate your efforts, and thank you. Time for all parties to move on and for NUFC to sign a more reliable striker because Isak can’t do it all on his own!”
A further injury to Wilson has frustrated fans, but reader Jonnythebrave writes: “When fit, he’s a brilliant servant and I’m sure he is more fed up about it than we are. I agree he needed to go in January and his contract is up in the summer. ‘Availability’, that’s Wilson’s problem. He’ll leave on a free in summer on a ‘pay for play’ somewhere sunny. A waste of his talent, unfortunately.”
Ademola Lookman, who has rebuilt his career at leading Serie A team Atalanta, is linked with Newcastle as a reinforcement of the front line. Don Toon writes: “Lookman would certainly fit the bill due to his versatility. Second striker with Wilson injured yet again or right wing is what we need. Would cost around £50m in the inflated January window so cannot see this coming to anything. Besides why would Atalanta want to sell, riding high at the top of Serie A and Lookman on fire? Unfortunately I cannot see us bringing in any new additions this window but we can finish the season strongly if we can find some consistency.”
