Newcastle opening date looms for luxury hotel chain loved by celebrities

A boutique hotel chain which has welcomed celebrity guests including Katy Perry, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Hugh Jackman is weeks away from opening its latest venue on Newcastle Quayside.

Dakota Hotels first unveiled plans to create a waterfront hotel in June 2023, after submitting plans to transform an empty office building at St Ann’s Wharf into a boutique-style 118 bedroomed hotel, complete with a ground-floor bar and grill area overlooking the riverside promenade. The UK hotel chain currently has five hotels, based in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Motherwell, Leeds and Manchester, welcoming celebrity guests including A listers Glenn Close, the Spice Girls and Oasis musician Liam Gallagher.

Now the company has revealed it is creating 120 jobs at its Newcastle site, and it is working towards a Spring opening date, with bookings now being taken online from April 15 onward, ahead of its launch. The company said the hotel will also have a series of suites, with Newcastle’s premier suite – The Grand Deluxe– poised to set a new standard as the largest and most luxurious in the city.

The two-bedroom Grand Deluxe Suite even includes a butler service, a fireplace, steam shower and roll-top bath, lounge and dressing areas, and views across the Tyne. Meanwhile the hotel’s restaurant The Grill is described as a sophisticated dining destination with sleek décor, attentive service, and a menu of classics crafted using the seasonal ingredients, with food including prime cut steaks Venetian dip and bread, seafood dishes and Sunday roasts.

The hotel operators hope the prime property will be used by guests and visitors for coffee catchups, client meetings or date night drinks at Dakota Bar, which will have mood lighting and plush seating designed to make it the place to be in Newcastle. The Newcastle hotel will also have a sophisticated Champagne Room alongside a stunning waterfront terrace, events space, and cigar terrace with a humidor, offering a selection of cigars in an al fresco setting.

Dakota also offers meeting spaces, accommodating groups from six to 60 people, including the private dining room for up to eight guests, the boardroom for 10, the champagne room for 20, the library for 30, and the meeting room for 60. Mark Spanton has been appointed as general manager of Dakota Newcastle.

He said: “I am incredibly excited to lead the opening of Dakota Newcastle on the iconic Quayside this spring. With its stunning waterfront location and dynamic cultural scene, this city is the perfect setting for our signature brand of luxury hospitality. We look forward to welcoming guests and delivering an exceptional experience that Dakota is renowned for.”
