Newcastle United contract talks active with key man after significant milestone passed

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe wants to see Fabian Schar’s contract extension fixed up soon. The head coach has spoken of the importance of Schar’s presence in the squad and underlined the fact that the 33-year-old can play in more than one position.

Schar’s last yearly contract extension was triggered on January 8 last year but negotiations for the ex-Hoffenheim player have taken a little longer in 2025.

When asked about Schar’s contractual situation, Howe told Chronicle Live: “I don’t think there is a set thing for each player, but I know there has been discussions taking place between Paul Mitchell and Fabian’s representatives. Fingers crossed we find a solution, and we get to a situation where everybody is happy, and Fabian can extend his stay with us.”

The Magpies have found themselves down to the bare bones defensively of late with Sven Botman and Dan Burn nursing injuries. Schar, aside from an early season suspension and a brief illness, has been more than reliable after starting 24 matches in all competitions.

But Howe issued a reminder that he can play in more than one position and can be a genuine asset. Howe said: “In recent games, you can see he has been very good at different jobs we have given him. He is a player that you can use in different ways. He is very flexible, and his game suits the modern way. His technical ability goes without saying but he has been very good off the ball.”

Howe feels he can be useful as an auxiliary midfielder going into the run-in for the Magpies. The Toon boss added: “He is quite comfortable jumping into midfield to help us with our press. He is quite comfortable staying in his position as well. But that tactical understanding makes him unique with his brain in terms of seeing the game. That is what you get with experienced players in that area of the pitch. He and Dan have done really well with the other defenders we’ve had this year.”
