Newcastle United fans have reminded Virgil van Dijk of the night Liverpool scored in ‘extra time’ after the Reds captain slammed Geordie referee Michael Oliver for playing a ‘big part’ in his side dropping points against Everton.
Liverpool were 2-1 up and on the verge of going nine points clear at the top of the table when James Tarkowski scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. Liverpool were furious that the goal stood – both Arne Slot and assistant Sipke Hulshoff were among those sent off at full-time – but a VAR check ruled there had not been a foul in the build-up and that Tarkowski was, in fact, onside.
There were 97 minutes and eight seconds on the clock when Tarkowski lashed the ball past Alisson after just five minutes were added on. However, it is worth noting that the game had been stopped in the 93rd minute following a nasty clash of heads between Jarrad Branthwaite and Everton team-mate Charly Alcaraz. The pair ended up receiving treatment for around two minutes, which explained why the game continued beyond the allotted time, but van Dijk was still far from happy with Oliver.
“Very disappointed to lose in the last seconds of the game or, even, over in extra time but, listen, it is what it is,” the Dutchman said following the 2-2 draw. “It’s not easy to accept it, especially in the manner how, but we take it and we move on.
“I think it was over extra time. The inevitable is coming, but I think the referee had a big part in the game today.”
The shoe has been on the other foot, of course, as Newcastle fans were keen to remind van Dijk. The allotted five minutes of stoppage time were up when Fabio Carvalho scored a 97th minute-winner against the Magpies at Anfield a couple of seasons ago.
Although Newcastle should have defended the corner better, regardless, Eddie Howe remarked that ‘it seemed like the final whistle was never coming from our perspective’ and Geordies have certainly not forgotten that night.
James Pearce commented: “Van Dijk complaining Everton scored after extra time, conveniently forgetting when Liverpool benefitted from this against #nufc in 2022. One rule for Liverpool, another for everyone else!” Anthony Irvine wrote: “Pretty sure at Anfield they scored in the 89th minute of extra time.” Toon/Bears/F1 added: “Can’t believe I’m seeing Liverpool fans complaining about added time in addition to the original time added on, loved it when they scored against us a few seasons back.”
