Eddie Howe will be hoping and praying the injury to Alexander Isak isn’t a severe one with the Carabao Cup Final on the horizon.
Newcastle United were without their main man for the defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, with the Swedish striker ruled out of the matchday squad after picking up a slight groin injury. The injury isn’t expected to keep him out long term with the Magpies not taking any risks and he did travel to Anfield on Wednesday night.
There was, however, slight cause for concern when Callum Wilson headed straight down the tunnel for treatment after being substituted following a clash of heads with Virgil van Dijk.
The Newcastle number nine was able to carry on playing after the incident, but will likely need stitches after the bloody incident, picked up during his first start of the campaign. – the extent of that injury will become clearer once we’ve heard from Howe.
Chronicle Live has taken a look at the latest Newcastle injury news prior to this weekend’s FA Cup clash with Brighton.
Alexander Isak
What we know: The Newcastle forward travelled to Anfield but was left out of the matchday squad after picking up a groin injury. The injury is only believed to be a minor one but the club weren’t willing to take any risks with the Carabao Cup Final on the horizon.
What Eddie Howe has said: “It’s really disappointing that we lose Alex, but he’s a player that we can’t take any risks with. It became apparent in the day or so after the last game that he was feeling something so he misses out today.
“We don’t think it’s serious at all so that’s in part of our minds to try and keep him available for the following games we have.”
Estimated return: None given.
Joelinton
What we know: Joelinton picked up a knee injury in the Magpies defeat to Fulham earlier this month though there is hope he’ll return for the Carabao Cup Final later this month.
What Eddie Howe has said: “He is another player who could be quite close. Joe is always important from a number of perspectives especially in defending set-pieces.
“He has those key aspects that we have missed when he’s not there. His physicality and strength there is an obvious presence missing in our midfield. Joey is a massive player for us.”
Estimated return: March 2
Sven Botman
What we know: Botman has been sidelined since Newcastle’s win over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg earlier this month after returning from a long-term injury.
What Eddie Howe has said: “Sven’s improving and he’s improving quickly, so we’ll see whether he makes it. It’ll be close,” Howe told reporters on Tuesday. “Again with Joe, it is similar to Sven, he is really improving and doing really well and pushing.”
Estimated return: March 2.
Jamaal Lascelles
What we know: The defender is now in the final stages of recover from his ACL injury in March last year. He is back in training as he looks to build up his workload and he could return to the squad next month.
Potential return date: March 2025.
