Newcastle United learn fresh deadline to keep Kieran Trippier amid transfer link after superb show

Kieran Trippier remains a wanted man in Turkey despite his outstanding performance for Newcastle United in their Carabao Cup triumph over Arsenal.

The Turkish transfer window remains open until February 11. It is the only window still open, apart from the MLS, after the UK deadline passed at 11pm on Monday. A number of sides in Turkey are hoping to do business with Premier League clubs.

ESPN reported that Galatasary are still interested in signing Trippier before their deadline. The 34-year-old has slipped behind Tino Livramento in the bid for a first-team spot at Newcastle but was selected to start last night for the Magpies’ massive Carabao Cup semi-final second leg clash against Arsenal.

The veteran defender completed his first 90 minutes of the season with a rock-solid performance as a right wing-back as Eddie Howe’s men delivered a tactical masterclass. Trippier joined Newcastle in the January transfer window three years ago. Then, he was Eddie Howe’s first signing and has turned out to be one of the best buys in the PiF era, and will go down as possibly the best right-back in Newcastle’s illustrious history.

However, the player will only have 12 months left on his contract at the end of this season. The ex-Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur star came close to joining Bayern Munich last winter, only for Newcastle to block the move. Howe and Paul Mitchell are likely to resist any moves for Trippier before the Turkish deadline passes.

Galatasary apparently want to add a right-back and centre-half before the Turkish window closes and Trippier is one of the options being pursued, although ESPN say a source close to negotiations has described the deal as “complicated.”

And in an extra complication, Galatasary are believed to be keen to push ahead with any deal before close of play today (February 6). That is because it is the deadline for submitting updated squad lists to UEFA ahead of the Europa League knockout rounds.

Galatasaray face a two-legged playoff against AZ Alkmaar after finishing 14th in the league phase table. They could play either Manchester United or Trippier’s old club Tottenham Hotspur in the round of 16 if they progress.

Despite his lack of starts in recent weeks, Trippier remains an influential figure in the Newcastle dressing room. The 50-cap star is one of Howe’s leadership group despite seeing the captain’s armband handed to Bruno Guimaraes last summer and Eddie Howe will fight to keep hold of the defender, having already lost Lloyd Kelly to Juventus. As he showed with a stellar display against Leandro Trossard, he still has a lot to give this Newcastle side.

Trippier for his part is looking forward to the Carabao Cup final on March 16, and believes Newcastle can learn from their last venture to Wembley two years ago. He said: [Reaching the final] it means everything. We have had a taste of it, unfortunately we lost last time but we have got that experience, we have been in these moments before. First we will focus on the game against Birmingham at the weekend.”
