Newcastle United are locked in talks with Atlanta United over the sale of Miguel Almiron – with the prospect of his departure this week now increasing.
Chronicle Live understands the discussions between the Magpies and the Major League Soccer side are “progressing” and Almiron is interested in a move back to the club he was signed from in 2019 – if personal terms are good. Almiron’s exit would enhance the chances of incoming business in the summer although Eddie Howe has been consistent when stating he does not expect any incoming signings in the winter trading period.
Sporting director Paul Mitchell has been working on Almiron’s exit and has spoken to the backroom staff about the future benefits of the sale. Arrangements have been made for the wide man’s medical with some of the process to take place in the UK.
Almiron essentially said goodbye to fans at Southampton at the weekend but the deal was still being worked on this morning. Newcastle are certainly open to the sale that could net them around £10million this window. This would be deemed decent business given United would recoup almost half the money they paid for Almiron six years ago.
Given Almiron will be 31 next month and the player has failed to hit form this season, Newcastle are selling the star at a good time. Speaking about pushing Almiron to the 3,000 away fans at the weekend, Howe said: “It was just the crowd were very much embracing him and giving him a lot of love.
“And I just felt it was you know, Miggy’s not that kind of character that’s got a huge ego that absorbs all the attention. But I just felt it was imperative that we got him to the front.
“And everyone acknowledged he’s been unbelievable for us. His attitude, his commitment, the way he’s played. I’m not saying it’s a goodbye. We don’t know what’s going to happen. But I just thought it was a great moment for him.”
However, things have moved on since Saturday and Almiron’s departure looks on the cards for the Magpies if the MLS side meet the terms and conditions.
