Newcastle United make strong vow after Liverpool diehard turned the air blue

Eddie Howe has vowed Newcastle United will do ‘everything in their power’ to finally get a result at Anfield.

It has been nearly 31 years since Newcastle defeated Liverpool on their own turf in the Premier League. To say Anfield has been an unhappy hunting ground would be an understatement; Newcastle have only picked up five measly points in the red half of Merseyside since that aforementioned 2-0 win back in 1994.

However, Newcastle went toe-to-toe with the league leaders in a 3-3 thriller in the reverse fixture at St James’ Park in December and the Magpies have tended to raise their game against the established order this season. Although Newcastle were admittedly well-beaten by Manchester City at the Etihad earlier this month, the black-and-whites have won at the Emirates, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Old Trafford this season.

Much will depend on how Newcastle handle what Howe has termed ‘an emotional stadium’ and it was just a couple of seasons ago that Newcastle came within seconds of claiming a point at Anfield – only for Fabio Carvalho to score a dramatic late winner long after the allotted time was up. The goal sparked a clash on the touchline after John Achterberg stuck two fingers up at the visiting bench and the former Liverpool goalkeeping coach later admitted he ‘felt satisfied that Newcastle’s apparent attempt to delay the match had not been successful’.

A number of Liverpool fans who stayed behind after the final whistle ended up booing Newcastle players and staff off the field with one supporter even repeatedly roaring: “YOU F—— DESERVED THAT!” However, following the 2-1 loss, Howe said his ‘ideal’ was that his side were ‘booed off every week’ on the road because they ‘don’t want to be popular’. Does the Newcastle boss want to see that edge from his side once more?

“We want to be competitive,” he told reporters. “We always respect our opponent but as soon as the whistle goes, we’re there to win.

“We’re there to do everything in our power to get that result. I want to see that determination from the team.

“I don’t think we saw it against Manchester City. There was an inevitability with our performance of what was going to happen and that can’t happen in any away game.”
