Newcastle United are well aware of Turkish wonderkid Semih Kılıcsoy with the Besiktas star being touted to Premier League clubs in the current winter window.
Chronicle Live reported last week that the winger was offered to high level figures at St James’ Park by via intermediaries in Turkey. The 19-year-old would be an exciting addition at United but this is not a great time for the Magpies to be doing this type of deal.
Make no doubt about it, Newcastle could do with a pacy youngster like Kılıcsoy who also has the added advantage of being excellent with both feet. It would answer some prayers as far as Eddie Howe’s winger department was concerned.
Those tasked with selling the teenager to the bright lights of the Premier League have been hitting a brick wall with some top clubs. Why? Because despite being 19, he is a fully fledged Turkey international who netted 12 goals last season for Besiktas. He is deemed first-team material hence his price tag of over £16m.
The counter-argument back from Premier League club recruitment departments is the price is “too lumpy” for a player that is unproven in the cut and thrust world of the English top-flight. This season the goals have dried up a little with just two to his name although he has weighed in with six assists too. Turkish media suggested the winger was still on Newcastle’s radar today with football publication Skorer throwing Kılıcsoy’s name into the mix again today.
However, Newcastle’s inability to sign senior players has been obvious this month. Yes there is money to spend from the owners, but PSR rules mean that it is extremely difficult to justify what would be a luxury buy.
It’s not impossible, but if Newcastle splash out £16m on the winger now, they’d need to make headroom via other transfers later in the year. Whether, Kılıcsoy has already been punted to a rival by that time remains to be seen – but Newcastle aren’t the only club to have been contacted by his representatives this month. Villa, Arsenal and Everton have also been approached but nobody has bitten just yet.
