Newcastle United clawed themselves back into the Champions League qualifying race with a 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest.
The Magpies fell behind early to Callum Hudson-Odoi’s strike at the Leazes End but a goal glut was on the way. It was Lewis Miley who swept home the equaliser on 23 minutes before Jacob Murphy nudged Newcastle ahead two minutes later.
By the 33rd minute, Newcastle had extended the lead to 3-1 thanks to Alexander Isak’s spot-kick following Ola Aina’s handball. And Isak had another soon after to put United 4-1 up and in a commanding position.
Forest came back with two late goals to set up a tense finish but Newcastle held on.
Here’s how the players rated overall:
Nick Pope 7
Beaten early and dealt well with the routine moments. But won’t be happy at conceding three.
Tino Livramento 7
Picked up a booking but seems to have his hand on the right-back slot again after Kieran Trippier was benched today.
Fabian Schar 7
A sterling afternoon of work defensively and almost got in on the goals when his header struck the post.
Dan Burn 6
A mixed bag in truth with a couple of defensive switch offs and some well-timed tackles.
Lewis Hall 9
A Rolls-Royce performance especially offensively as he had a hand in four first half goals. Efficient defensively too with some crisp interceptions and tackles.
Lewis Miley 9
Staked his claim with an impressive display. The teenager was the player who grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck with the equaliser.
Joe Willock 8
A major step up from City shocker. Played a smart running game and weighed in with an assist for Isak.
Bruno Guimaraes 8
Knew he had to step it up after City surrender. And did enough here. Was back on the ball today.
Anthony Gordon 8
Back to his usual self after off day at Man City. Whipped in half a dozen crosses.
Jacob Murphy 7
Recovered from a shaky start and a mistake to play his part in the win by nudging Newcastle ahead 2-1. Looked a different player after scoring.
Alexander Isak 9
Led the line with authority. Had this game sealed off early with a first half brace.
Subs
Harvey Barnes 6 (for Murphy 68)
