Newcastle United player ratings slump to 5/10 at Anfield as one Magpies star scores highest

Newcastle United’s search for a Premier League win has now stretched to 29 matches after they were second best at Anfield for long periods.

Liverpool grabbed the lead on 11 minutes when Luis Diaz beat Fabian Schar on the left before rolling it to Dominik Szoboszlai who sent a left-footed shot past Nick Pope. On second inspection Schar could have done more to stop the cross but Pope failed to get a finger on the ball after it had rolled through Dan Burn’s legs.

The Reds doubled their lead when Alexis Mac Allister cut through the middle and played a one-two with Mo Salah before the Argentina star swept home.

Here’s how the players rated overall:

Nick Pope 5

The opening goal will be debated and whether he could have done more to stop it. But overall he still looked rusty. Did not get close to the second goal. Saved by VAR for a potential third goal by Cody Gakpo.

Tino Livramento 6

Fought hard but taken off in the second half. Faded after bright start.

Fabian Schar 5

Left standing for the opener and forced into foul after foul.

Dan Burn 5

Did not cover himself in glory for the first goal and then turned inside out for second.

Lewis Hall 6

Comfortable on the ball but caught napping for the second.

Sandro Tonali 6

Did not look fully fit. A decent effort though.

Bruno Guimaraes 5

Quite like the trip to the Etihad Stadium this game passed him by against stellar midfield. Like Man City saw his number come up before the end.

Joe Willock 5

Did not have the desired impact.

Jacob Murphy 5

Some bright moments but fizzled out.

Anthony Gordon 5

A willing runner but lacked clinical touch.

Callum Wilson 7

Made a decent fist of things with a couple of glimpses of goal before being forced off after a blow to the head. At least he looked capable of finding something.

Subs

William Osula 7 (Wilson 67)

Harvey Barnes 6 (for Willock 67)

Lewis Miley 7 (Tonali 67)

Kieran Trippier 5 (for Livramento 67)

Sean Longstaff (for Bruno 87)

*Subs must play 15 minutes to get a mark
