Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has made his stance clear on bringing in a player on loan in the remainder of the January window.
The Magpies have found themselves restricted in terms of signing players in cash deals due to the strict PSR rule book imposed on them. But Howe has suggested that looking at bringing in loan deals is not an alternative or even a way of saving money in the winter trading period.
Loan fees as high as £8million are applicable on some deals while paying the majority of wages also comes into the conversation. Howe also indicated earlier this month that Premier League rivals aren’t in a hurry to do Newcastle any favours. As the clock ticks down to deadline day, Howe was asked about the prospect of signing players, potentially from Premier League rivals, on loan.
Howe said: “Yes, of course there is. But then you have to look at the cost. Everyone has an assumption that a loan deal comes with minimal cost. Loan deals can be just as expensive as a permanent transfer.
“Although, they don’t have the legacy of one, sometimes they are short-term. So you have that and you have the quality of player available on loan. I am not sure they exist.”
Newcastle loaned Lewis Hall from Chelsea last season with great success in the end. After an initial spell of not getting into Howe’s side, the player has rose to prominence and finds himself in the England squad. The move eventually led to a £28million deal for Hall at St James’ Park.
The only other loan deal from a Premier League rival post-takeover came when Matt Targett arrived initially from Aston Villa before making a £12m move. Targett’s loan fee back in 2022 was £3m after he swapped Villa Park for Tyneside.
