Chronicle Live readers have been sharing their thoughts on Newcastle United‘s recent 4-0 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The Magpies missed a golden opportunity to climb to fourth place after suffering a heavy defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad.
Omar Marmoush netted a hat-trick in the first half, with James McAtee, a substitute for Manchester City, adding the final touch with a late volley from a corner kick. It’s worth noting that Newcastle has never claimed victory at the Etihad in the Premier League.
In fact, you’d have to rewind to 2006 – well before Manchester City’s own takeover – to find the last time the Magpies even secured a point at the champions’ home ground. Moreover, Newcastle haven’t managed to score a goal at the stadium for over six years.
Chronicle Live readers have been sharing their feelings following the defeat in our comments section – with many agreeing it feels like a significant missed opportunity. They have also pointed out the lack of recent transfer activity as one significant reason for the defeat.

Regroup and onto the next game it’s as simple as that. EH has my backing and should have the backing of the entire fan base. The guy has worked miracles so far in his tenure and taken us to two cup finals and a Champions League campaign and people still criticise him. It begs belief it really does.”
Arko adds: “They done exactly what other teams have done to beat us, they went for every ball and never let us settle and they attacked, Eddie needs to start doing his homework again not to study how the other teams play but to see how we get beat, we also need some new blood into the team.”
Paranoidandroid writes: “Man City realised they needed to strengthen their team in the January window and spent £120m (despite the charges mounting up from ongoing FFP investigation!) We haven’t made a serious first team signing over the past two transfer windows. But we have sold useful players. It’s not the only reason we lost today, but other clubs are spending money and improving, we are just selling players and going backwards. What a poor position to be in for the so-called ‘richest club in the world’ – looking worn out and unable to spend our own money!”
Ropppa believes: “We have to trust the manager to turn this around again. He’s been in situations earlier this season where we’ve had very poor performances and each time he’s managed to get the team turned around. In some ways our success this season has been achieved through motivation and drive and it has masked the fact that we simply lack the kind of deep quality that teams like Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal possess. We’re still a work in progress and are still some way off being an elite club. We’ve punched way above our weight for a season or two – to Howe’s immense credit- but thus is a big challenge trying to compete on three fronts. If only we could have spent £180,000,000 in January.”
MealyWC3441 says: “Our manager’s usual comment after a loss of this sort – and we have had a few this season – is, ‘we weren’t ourselves today’. I’m not having a go at EH, because I’m a ‘supporter’, but ‘ourselves’ is fast becoming ourselves – if you know what I mean.”
ipagardner feels: “The upshot is we are inconsistent and have a number of average players. There will be no Europe this season. Schar’s age is beginning to show Willock is at best a sub Trippier he is also showing his age. Murphy has a couple of good games then regresses for a few. Longstaff average at best. Play like this in the final against Liverpool, we will get trounced.”
30YearItch thinks: “Problems I have with Eddie Howe is his insistence with playing old slowish defenders. Did it at Bournemouth and he is doing it again. Were getting rumbled quite a lot these days because of Eddie Howes insistence on playing (and keeping) one paced slowish defenders.”
But Axepete defended the team’s overall quality, stating: “Oh how quickly things change. Bruno was a World Class player wanted by City – Isak is the best striker in the Premiership who we wouldn’t sell for 150 million. Trippier showed he may have lost a wee bit of pace but he is still a World Class Right Back. Supply from our wingers, Gordon and Murphy are as good as any team in the league ….. one bad performance and we are total rubbish again ??? Behave yourselves. YES we were very poor today BUT City looked back to something like their best. Marmoush was on fire, Savinho was virtually unplayable and they didn’t even suffer from another almost non existent display from Haaland.
“When they play with confidence City can do that to anyone. I would put money on it they still finish in the top 3 and are the favourites to win the Premier League next season. We have been inconsistent lately but we have suffered with too many injuries and our squad is not big enough to cope with the work load. I am still hugely proud of our team and I am confident this was a performance we will put behind us and pick up lots more points before the season finishes. PSR is killing us. The sooner we can add more quality to bolster the depth of our squad the better. We are all guilty of forgetting how far we have come in such a short time and we need to get behind our lads. We have plenty of time on our hands and we have 41 points from 25 games …. we would have been ecstatic a few years ago!”
