Newcastle United have been running the rule over sought after Atalanta star Ademola Lookman in recent weeks.
The 27-year-old goal Serie A goal machine shares the same agent as Joelinton and is a player that head of recruitment Steve Nickson needs no introduction to after several trips to Bergamo. Lookman impressed again at the weekend in a 4-0 win at Juventus no less to take his tally to 18 for the season.
The London-born player is also interesting Liverpool while Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are all keen on the man who fired in a hat-trick in last season’s Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen. He has one year left on his deal with Atalanta with the Italian side able to extend that further by an extra season if they please but a public fallout with Gian Piero Gasperini means he is likely to be sold next summer.
Reports in Italy say that Liverpool have readied a £37million bid for Lookman despite the fact he played for Everton earlier in his career. However, there are also suggestions from Bergamo that Atalanta may look to completely cash in with a bidding war very possible given the levels of interest and his eagerness to go.
The spat came when Lookman missed a penalty against Club Brugge before Gasperini labelled him one of the “worst penalty takers” he’d ever seen. Despite the tension, Lookman has continued to play, but the end seems nigh for the ex-Leicester man.
Lookman released a statement reading: “Being singled out in the manner I have been not only hurts but feels deeply disrespectful, not least because of the immense hard work and commitment I have always put in each and every day to help bring success to this club and to the incredible fans of Bergamo.”
An asking price of £42million now seems likely for Lookman in the summer and he could be one of many options for sporting director Paul Mitchell. Lookman’s versatility is also an attractive factor for the Magpies as the star can play through the middle or out wide on either flank.
Lookman started his career at Charlton Athletic before Everton paid £10m for his services. But the move to Goodison Park did not work out and he was loaned to RB Leipzig where Mitchell was sporting director.
Further loans at Leicester and Fulham would follow before he was sold by the Red Bull club to Atalanta. Since he has taken Serie A by storm and could be an exciting signing for Newcastle if they could pull it off.
