Newcastle United have been approached by Matheus Cunha’s representatives to verify interest levels ahead of the summer transfer market.
It’s understood that Newcastle were told of Cunha’s £62.5m release clause which can be activated this summer. Manchester United were also contacted by an intermediary this week.
The Brazil international’s arrival would be deemed a “wow signing” by Newcastle supporters and it would be intriguing to see where Cunha would fit into Eddie Howe’s side. The striker has blasted 15 goals and made four assists this season for Wanderers.
Newcastle retain an interest in Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo but Cunha’s desire to leave Wolves could push a big decision the way of Howe and his coaching staff.
Howe has always played down the arrival of marquee signings but hinted there could be more money to spend this summer. He said: “I don’t know if this summer will be different and suddenly the outlook totally changes. I think that’s for another day. What I would say is that hopefully the future beyond looks very different.”
As Wolves close in on safety, Cunha has made his intentions clear with the Midlands side. He said: “Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.
“Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.”
