Newcastle United’s special Blaydon Races moment at Wembley after winning Carabao Cup final

Newcastle United wrote their name in the Tyneside history books with a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup Final.

Blaydon Races boomed round Wembley Stadium as 32,000 Geordies burst into song to celebrate the occasion. Eddie Howe’s men become the first team to win a domestic trophy since the FA Cup Triumph against Manchester City in 1955.

Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored the all important goals against the Reds to put Newcastle’s name on the Carabao Cup trophy. They were dominant throughout the game, but had to survive a late onslaught from Arne Slot’s side, with Federico Chiesa scoring late into injury-time to give Liverpool a lifeline.

Newcastle shut up shop and ensured the trophy would be coming back to the North East. As the final whistle blew, the travelling Toon Army burst into celebrations.

Just seconds after embracing one another, the travelling Geordie faithful burst into ‘the Blaydon Races’ as it boomed out of the Wembley speakers. It’s a moment that generations of supporters have dreamed of, and they’ve finally witnessed their team winning silverware.

“The fans behind that goal, most of them have never seen silverware or Newcastle win a trophy which is incredible,” said Gary Neville, who was on co-commentary duty for the came. “That’s about to change.

“They’re about to see their manager and captain lift a trophy for the first time in 70-years. It was so sad going up to St. James’ Park, but it’s back.”

Newcastle supporters will be able to watch their side in action at St. James’ Park on April 2nd when they host Brentford at St. James’ Park, the first time since winning the trophy.
