Stargazers have been given a superb show on the first night of 2025 as the Northern Lights made another return to the North East.
On Monday, December 30, the Met Office issued a statement saying that a coronal mass ejection (CME) had left the sun and was expected to land on New Year’s Eve. Aurora hunters in the North East would have had a quiet end to 2024 due to heavy cloud cover, but gaps opened up on New Year’s Day and the show begun.
Pink lights were the backdrop to some of the region’s best known landmarks, including Herd Groyne at South Shields, the Angel of the North, and Souter Lighthouse. They were also spotted from residential areas across the region, including Wallsend, Westerhope, North Shields, and Great Park.
