It’s a place that many people have had at least one drink in or walk past on a daily basis either to or from work, but a very popular pub in Newcastle now has a new look, thanks to having a lick of paint inside and out and some brand new toilets.
A proper Geordie institution, The Black Garter has been a stapler of many people’s days and nights out in Newcastle city centre for decades and had queues outside it before 9am when pubs and bars finally re-opened after the first Covid lockdown in July 2020. After being forced to close its doors for months and then again at the start of 2021 when the country was locked down again, its been business as usual for the Garter for the last four years.
That said, it did close its doors for four days towards the end of January with a post on its Facebook page revealing that it was shutting to allow for work to be done on its toilets. And the lavs aren’t the only thing that’s looking a bit different at the famous Clayton Street boozer, as its exterior now look almost unrecognisable to how it looked just a few months ago.
Gone is the mix of black and cream that adorned the outside walls for years and in its place is a very smart navy aesthetic, a new colour scheme that has also been carried on into the main bar, which is also looking rather different to how it did at the turn of the year.
Like many places in town, The Black Garter is firmly in the grip of cup final fever, ahead of Newcastle taking on Liverpool for the Carabao trophy at Wembley on Sunday. Almost as soon as United made the final, thanks to a 4-0 aggregate win over Arsenal in the semi final, the Garter opened up bookings for reserved tables, all of which are gone now, but a post on Facebook has revealed that there will still be plenty of room for walk ins, with doors opening nice and early for the occasion.
