Paul Mitchell repeats Newcastle United move as two-year contract offer ‘prepared’

Fabian Schar is reportedly close to signing a contract extension with Newcastle United as the two parties go on with talks. The Swiss defender’s current deal is due to expire this summer.

He certainly isn’t a player who Eddie Howe will want to let go cheaply due to his defensive skill and aerial ability, with the Newcastle manager previously making that clear when speaking to the media.

Speaking to Chronicle Live, Howe said: “Fingers crossed we can find a solution – and we get to a situation where everybody is happy – and Fabian can extend his stay with us.”

The Magpies boss also stated that he knew about discussions between Schar’s representatives and Paul Mitchell, who works as Newcastle’s sporting director.

It’s an important period of Schar’s life. Now 33, he made a decision to retire from international football – following Euro 2024 – putting his professional focus purely on club football.

This situation isn’t far from what happened last year with regards to Schar’s future. Indeed, after a short period of doubt whether or not the Swiss defender would stay, he put pen-to-paper on a one-year extension. When he signed that deal, the 33-year-old said that he feels really at ‘home’ at St James’ Park.

He continued to say: “I feel so comfortable living in Newcastle; I love the city and I love playing for the club and the incredible fans. I can’t say enough how much I love them, and how much their support means to me.”

Schar has played 215 matches for Newcastle and scored an impressive 19 goals, with eight assists. His dominance in the box – and from set-pieces – has been a distinctive feature of the Swiss’ gameplay.
