Peacock who fell off roof into County Durham garden after being spooked is rescued by RSPCA

A peacock who fell off the roof of a two-storey building into a garden has been rescued by RSPCA officers.

The handsome bird was reported to the animal charity after he was witnessed falling off the roof after being spooked on Bank Holiday Monday, May 6. He fell into the garden of an empty property on Elizabeth Place in Shotton Colliery and was thought to have died.

However, he was mobile and moving around the garden when RSPCA inspectors Christine Nisbet and Krissy Rain arrived. Christine said: “Given he had fallen from two storeys, he was still very mobile and he gave us a good runaround – but we managed to catch him eventually.”

It is not yet known where the bird came from, or who he belongs to. However, he is on the road to recovery at a specialist animal centre.

Christine added: “We took him to a vet and he had a scrape on his foot, but no further injuries – he was very lucky and it was important to get him checked over. We don’t know where he came from but no one has yet come forward to claim him as a pet.

“He’s now gone to a specialist animal rescue centre to be looked after. It was an interesting job – peacocks are, after all, not your everyday bird!”
