With the weather cancelling the first New Year fireworks in Newcastle since Covid after 70mph winds were forecast by the Met Office, revellers took to warmer surroundings to welcome in the New Year.
Many people had been looking forward to the display, after Newcastle City Council announced two fireworks events to welcome in 2025. However, the council made the hard decision to cancel the celebrations as the high winds meant it could “pose a risk to to those attending, as well as our event teams working on-site”.
The high winds and rainy weather did not stop people from enjoying the New Year in Newcastle’s warmer indoor environments. Cocktail bars, restaurants and the STACK were busy with people celebrating the end of 2024 and welcoming in 2025.
There were DJs and drag queens at Market Shaker, and a New Year’s Eve ticketed event at the STACK by St. James’ Park as revellers quickly forgot about the weather and the cancelled fireworks, and welcomed the New Year in style.
