Pictures of North East’s ‘first taste of winter’ as Met Office warns of ‘continued winter hazards’

County Durham woke to a scattering of snow on Tuesday morning, as temperatures plummeted across the North East on Monday night.

Pictures show snowfall across County Durham, covering the village of Brandon and landmarks including Durham Cathedral. Light snow also fell in Consett, dusting many rooftops.

Today’s conditions have been branded as “the first taste of winter” by Neil Armstrong, Met Office chief meteorologist, who added: “With cold Arctic air firmly in place over the UK, continued winter hazards are likely through much of this week, with further updates to warnings likely in the coming days.”

The Met Office have issued a new yellow weather warning of snow and ice in the North East – expected Tuesday evening, overnight and during Wednesday morning.

The following areas in the region will be affected: Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Redcar and Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees and Sunderland.
