Plaqueboymax has elaborated on his critical take on Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime show performance.
During a recent stream, Max, who was among the stars in attendance at this year’s Super Bowl in New Orleans, largely took issue with the inclusion of the Drake-dissing “Not Like Us.” The song, fresh off a Grammys sweep, was the penultimate entry in Kendrick’s halftime setlist, which saw him opening with something unreleased before rolling right into “Squabble Up” off last year’s GNX album.
“Kendrick, you’re way bigger than this,” Max said, as seen in the clip below. “I’m gonna keep it so a buck. This is the Super Bowl. What, he probably gon’ do this one time? Bro ,he better than just a n***a who dissed Drake. He’s way better than just a n***a who dissed Drake. That should not be this n***a’s career. I don’t even wanna see Drake fall.”
From there, Max highlighted some songs he wishes would have been included—“Money Trees,” from 2012, and “Alright,” from 2015. He also conceded, however, that the stadium did indeed “erupt” when “Not Like Us” kicked off on Sunday.
“N***as was singing that ‘A minor’ shit like a bitch,” he said. “But yeah, the halftime show, that wasn’t it to me. I’mma keep it a buck. Did y’all fuck with it? That shit wasn’t it to me. I feel like he could have did his shit way better.”
Max went on to argue that Playboi Carti, whose Whole Lotta Red follow-up continues to elude us, “would have been better.” Previously, Max called Kendrick’s performance “ass.”
To be clear, Kendrick’s set wasn’t totally without a nod to previous eras of his career. He tucked a pair of Damn tracks into the setlist, sandwiching “Humble” and “DNA” in between the aforementioned “Squabble Up” and last year’s “Euphoria.” The latter is another entry from Kendrick and Drake’s beef, serving as a response to Drizzy’s “Push Ups” and the A.I.-enabled “Taylor Made Freestyle.” Things continued from there with “6:16 in LA,” “Family Matters,” “Meet the Grahams,” and, in May 2024, the Hot 100 blockbuster (and eventual lawsuit subject) “Not Like Us.”
Next for Kendrick is his and SZA’s Grand National Tour. Drake, meanwhile, is currently on the road and is expected to release a new joint project with PND later this week.
