Police use drone in County Durham arrest as suspect fled scene of reported theft from van

Officers from Durham Constabulary apprehended a man suspected of attempting to steal from a van with the help of a drone that guided officers on the ground to the suspects location.

Officers were called to reports of a man attempting to steal from a van at around 8.15am today (Wednesday, December 10), in Spennymoor.

When challenged, the suspect claimed to have fallen over before making off. Spennymoor Neighbourhood Police Team officers raced to the scene and one officer put up the drone to help their colleagues on the ground.

The suspect was chased on foot by ground officers through Middlestone Moor before being arrested just after 8.45am – much to the bewilderment of children being taken to school.

The man was arrested on suspicion of theft and several shoplifting offences and taken into custody where he remains.
