The Premier League has removed a post from their website that previously indicated that Arne Slot received a two-match suspension following his dismissal at the conclusion of Liverpool’s 2-2 stalemate with Everton on Wednesday evening. The now-deleted statement claimed Slot used “offensive, insulting, or abusive language” towards referee Michael Oliver.
Slot, alongside his deputy Sipke Hulshoff, was shown the red card at the end of the match for a confrontation with the official, while players Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure were also dismissed for an altercation in proximity to the away supporters after a tense finale to the last Merseyside derby to be played at Goodison Park.
Mohamed Salah’s 22nd goal of the league campaign had looked to seal a vital victory for the Reds after Alexis Mac Allister levelled the scoreline, initially disrupted by Beto’s opening goal. However, a stoppage-time volley by James Tarkowski ensured the historic rivals shared the spoils.
Slot seemingly faces a two-match touchline ban following his post-match exchange with Oliver, having already been sanctioned during the Reds’ 3-2 victory at Southampton back in November. As such, the head coach would be absent from the dugout for Sunday’s home game against Wolves and next week’s journey to Aston Villa.
A statement from the Premier League stated: “Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones were both sent off for two bookable offences in Everton’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool. The pair will each serve one-match bans,” reports the Liverpool Echo.
“Doucoure will sit out Everton’s upcoming Premier League encounter with Crystal Palace, while Jones is suspended for the first of Liverpool’s Matchweek 25 games, versus Wolverhampton Wanderers.”
“Liverpool head coach Arne Slot was dismissed at the end of the Merseyside derby for using offensive, insulting, or abusive language. He is handed a two-match touchline ban as a result.”
However, that final paragraph has now been deleted from the Premier League’s statement.
As a result of their dismissals neither Slot nor Hulshoff were permitted to take charge of the post-match press conference at Goodison Park, meaning Liverpool had no representatives on the night to talk through the contentious post-match scenes.
Oliver, who hails from Northumberland, was subjected a load of abuse on social media after the game. The referee is a Newcastle fan with the Magpies facing Liverpool in the league later this month and then also the Carabao Cup final on March 16.
